Bonxie at Preston Docks then on to Brockholes

With summer here and the birding getting quieter we had today set aside for a bit of history, Lancaster Castle or Lytham Hall, that was until 09:30 when news came in that the Great Skua, first seen last night at Preston Docks, was still there.  We decided to go for it as it would be the first Skua we have seen in Britain (the only other being a Pomarine Skua in Portugal).  When we arrived it was quite clear the bird was unwell.  It was on the water and made numerous failed attempts to take flight.  It seemed 'water logged' for want of a better expression.  The bird made it's way towards the steps at the eastern end of the marina and started to climb them.  The birds was ringed (RED KZ) and I'm told this is a Shetland bird.  Not the most pleasant circumstances for a lifer but I'm told the RSPCA arrived shortly after and took the bird into care.

We moved on to Brockholes and saw Whitethroat, Blackcap, Ringed Plover, Avocet, Jay, Common Sandpiper and a family of Goosander on the river.

Some nice dragonflies and moths about too that make nice photos but don't ask me what they are - I don't have a clue!  If you do then I'd love to hear from you - tweet me @thisdiscovery
